OPPORTUNITY HOUSE : A LOCAL TREASURE
Fifty years ago Opportunity House broke new ground to serve Henderson County in offering opportunities for service, learning and fellowship to both young and old. The Arts and Crafts groups as well as many other community groups benefited and grew with the “opportunity” made available via the space provided by Opportunity House.
Opportunity House is a unique local treasure! What makes and keeps Opportunity House as an exceptional resource for the community is the ability to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of community groups. Nearly 50 different groups make use of the facilities with many others renting the facility for weekend affairs. Its future lies in its ability to meet the “new opportunities” needs of the community. With your help we can continue our history of meeting these needs.
Some of the many classes and activity groups currently offered are the Ballroom Dance Club, the OH Golf League, the OH Singles Group, both National and International Mah Jongg Groups, a number of different Bridge games,Canasta, Cribbage, Pinochle, Men’s and Ladies’ Poker, Line Dancing, Clogging, Nia Fitness, Lapidary Group, Sewing Group, Pottery Group, Stained Glass, Weaving Group, Woodcarving, Oil & Acrylics Painting, Watercolor Painting, Portrait Drawing, Calligraphy, Knitting and Spanish. Rooms rentals are also available for various meetings, parties and community events.
“GOLDEN” OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE : CAPITAL BUILDING CAMPAIGN
Opportunity House today is in a building renovated in 1983 with an addition added in 1991. Twenty five years later we find that many aspects of the building need attention and upgrades to meet not only our current needs but also to pave the way for future needs of the community. A goal has been set to address the maintenance/upgrades and to generate a reserve for capital maintenance. Our Building and Grounds Committee has identified the following needs and set priorities (main bathrooms immediate need):
·Main bathrooms – completely redo $ 20,000
·Entry Reception Area – flooring, ceiling, paint, reception area, door $ 25,000
·General Building Improvements – flooring, ceiling, external doors, windows,
paint, upgrade electrical, improve kitchen, combine some rooms, upgrade
Annex bathrooms, etc $ 55,000
·Parking – resurface existing lot, overflow lot $ 65,000
·Landscaping – change to have minimal maintenance $ 5,000
·Capital reserve – replace heating/cooling, water heaters, etc $ 20,000
Total Capital Campaign $190,000
